Virginia chairs the firm’s White Collar Defense and Investigations practice. A former Assistant United States Attorney, Virginia advises and defends individuals, publicly and privately held corporations, boards, committees and governmental bodies in enforcement actions, internal and external investigations and related civil and administrative actions and compliance reviews. Her practice includes securities, health care, environmental, accounting, tax, bankruptcy, FCPA, import-export, ERISA, False Claims Act, FTC Act and disciplinary and licensing boards.

Virginia has won federal criminal jury trials from both the prosecution and defense sides. In 2013, she led a Calfee team that obtained 22 not guilty jury verdicts on all counts of wire fraud, and mistrial on a conspiracy count, in a federal case involving more than $200 million in factored false invoices. The client was fully exonerated. In 2014, she and her team represented a False Claims Act plaintiff who claimed that a nursing home pharmacy offered illegal drug pricing kickbacks, resulting in a $120 million settlement.

Virginia is National Delegate and Immediate Past President of the Federal Bar Association’s Northern District of Ohio Chapter. She is a member of the American Bar Association and its Criminal Justice section, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Virginia has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. She is a member of the Leadership Cleveland Class of 2011 and was named a “Woman of Professional Achievement” in 2012 by the YWCA of Greater Cleveland.

In her role with the DOJ, Virginia prosecuted white collar crimes as the district’s health care fraud coordinator, where she pioneered the use of statistical sampling in criminal cases. She also litigated civil qui tam actions under the False Claims Act. She received awards and citations from the DOJ, FBI, Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and National Health Care Anti-fraud Association (NHCAA), including its Investigation of the Year Award for the country’s first conviction and life sentence for health care fraud resulting in death.

Before working for the DOJ, Virginia spent five years with the Federal Trade Commission, where she focused on consumer protection and antitrust. She spent the first eight years of her legal career in private practice. Before becoming an attorney she worked as a newspaper reporter.

Virginia joined Calfee as a partner in 2006. She serves on the firm’s Executive Committee.
