Attorney Jean Martin has a special interest and has been practicing in the areas of product liability, mass tort, pharmaceutical and medical device law, and medical malpractice for more than 15 years. In 2014, she founded the Law Office of Jean Sutton Martin PLLC with an inspiration to build a firm that concentrates on stridently fighting for the rights of those unable to fight for themselves. Her relentless work ethic, personal attention to client, and innovative approach has earned her a significant reputation amongst lawyers and clients alike.
Attorney Martin has been named in North Carolina Super Lawyers, including Top 50 Women in North Carolina, and North Carolina's Legal Elite. She has attained the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell AV? Peer Review Rating, a testament to the fact that peers rank her at the highest level of professional excellence. In 2015, attorney Martin was inducted as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a prestigious trial lawyer honorary society comprised of less than one-half of one percent of American Lawyers. Fellows are selected based upon excellence and accomplishment in litigation, both at the trial and appellate levels, and superior ethical reputation. For upholding the highest principles of the legal profession and for outstanding dedication to the welfare of others, attorney Martin has also been selected as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honorary legal organization whose membership is limited to one third of one percent of lawyers in each state.
Born and raised in Salisbury, NC, attorney Martin attended Wake Forest University, graduating in 1989 with a B.S. in Mathematical Economics. Fifteen days after her Wake Forest graduation, attorney Martin entered the Master of International Business Studies (MIBS) program at the University of South Carolina. As a student in the German language track of the program, she worked as an intern with the sales finance team of Digital Equipment Company in Munich, Germany. Before heading back to Wake Forest for law school, attorney Martin worked as a marketing manager with an international candy manufacturer where her responsibilities included product development, brand licensing, packaging and promotion.
Attorney Martin received her J.D. in 1998. While in law school, she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Wake Forest Law Review and was a member of the Moot Court Board. Forever a proud Double Deacon, attorney Martin would later return to Wake Forest to serve as an adjunct professor with the law school.
Attorney Martin's legal career has taken a varied path, which has given her the opportunity to work on multi-million dollar deals as well as to serve as counsel in numerous cases that have resulted in multi-million dollar settlements. Early in her career, attorney Martin had the privilege of being an associate with Blanco, Tackabery, Combs & Matamoros, P.A. in Winston-Salem, NC. Her practice focused on corporate and commercial transactions, primarily for small to medium-sized business owners, family-owned businesses, and real estate developers. Attorney Martin was then presented with an opportunity to practice in her hometown of Salisbury, managing a large plaintiff's personal injury and toxic tort firm. In addition to her management responsibilities, she started and led the firm's pharmaceutical drug and medical device litigation division. Through the course of assisting families whose children had been harmed by vaccines, attorney Martin discovered a pattern of neurological injuries in children whose mothers had been given a particular drug during pregnancy. With this discovery, Jean initiated national litigation against a major pharmaceutical drug and children's product manufacturer.
In 2007, attorney Martin and her husband moved to Wilmington, NC so that she could establish a pharmaceutical drug and medical device litigation division for a local firm. In the ensuing years, attorney Martin was managing partner at Rhine Martin Law Firm, where in addition to her drug and medical device injury cases, she handled catastrophic personal injury cases, consumer class actions and complex civil litigation.
As of December 2014, attorney Martin is the principal owner of the Law Office of Jean Sutton Martin PLLC located in Wilmington, NC. The narrow practice of the firm focuses on products liability (including pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices), consumer class actions, pharmacy negligence and medical malpractice.
